Optimal Power Allocation for the Joint Radar and Communications With OFDM Waveform Transmission

In this paper, we propose an optimal power allocation strategy for the joint radar and communications (JRC) with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform transmission to improve the performance of radar detection, where the performance of radar detection is measured by kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD). The strategy maximizes the KLD and controls the total transmit power of radar under the constraint of the achievable communication rate to implement the match between radar transmitted powers in subcarriers and the corresponding subchannel conditions of radar and communications. The match can mitigate the noise and interference from the radar point of view, and meanwhile it can keep the achievable communication rate within an acceptable range. Simulation results show that the design based on KLD is effective, and it is also preferable to mutual information (MI).
