A Dynamic Model of the Favignana Island Non-Synchronous Power System for Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Tests

The paper presents the model that was developed to represent the frequency transients which can occur during operation in the non-synchronous power system supplying energy to a small island (Favignana Island in Sicily, Italy). The model was built to simulate in a real-time simulation framework the dynamic behaviour of main system components such as the diesel generation plant, or large photovoltaic plants directly connected to the MV network. The real-time model can be run in order to test, in a Power Hardware-in-the-Loop testing facility, the dynamic response of demand response components (such as loads or storage systems) which might be called to participate in fast frequency regulation. Tests shown in the paper are aimed to reproduce system response during possible scenarios of increasing renewable generation penetration.
