A 10-MHz CMOS-based Ring Oscillator with Low Power consumption For On-chip IC Applications

A ring oscillator used as a clock generation circuit in on-chip Integrated Circuit (IC) applications. The two biggest hurdles for on-chip IC applications are component size and power dissipation. In this paper, a ring oscillator is proposed that uses a four transistor inverter cell to minimize the power dissipation. Moreover, a Five-stage ring oscillator architecture is developed to achieve the desired signal frequency of 10 MHz at a temperature of 27°C, and the oscillating frequency changes from 9.59 to 10.8 MHz's over the temperature variations of −40°c to 125° c. The proposed ring oscillator circuit is simulated using standard CMOS 180nm technology. The results exhibit that the power consumption of 5.56 MW at a supply of 1V is achieved, which is approximately 45% less than the conventional ring oscillator.
