Micro-Newton Thrust Stand Calibration Using Electrostatic Lantern Rings

Numerical research on an electrostatic lantern rings calibration structure is conducted to produce an electrostatic driving force in the range of 0–2.25 mN. The driving force is the electrostatic attraction generated when a potential difference is applied between a set of oppositely arranged lantern rings. The electrostatic potential, electric field distribution, and force generated at different voltages are obtained. Due to the axial symmetry of electrostatic lantern rings, the radial electrostatic force component is balanced and the electrostatic force mainly acts in the axial direction. When the engagement distance of the rings is within 3–6 mm, the deflection angle does not exceed 2°, or the radial offset does not exceed 0.3 mm, the electrostatic force deviation is less than 5%. Electrostatic lantern rings provide an accurate and practical alternative method for thrust stand calibration.
