On-Chip Simulation of a Nine-Phase Electrical Drive and Power Electronics for Rapid Control Prototyping Applications

In this paper, a real-time capable controller-in-the-loop (CIL) model of a nine-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), as well as suitable power electronics, is presented. The proposed approach aims to simplify the research on control algorithms for multi-phase machines. The model is implemented on the field programmable gate array (FPGA) of a system-on-chip (SoC) with a sampling frequency of 1 MHz. The implementation utilizes automatic code generation without the need for manual optimization to achieve the sampling frequency. The open-source rapid control prototyping platform UltraZohm is used as a target platform. It is based on the Xilinx UltraScale+ Multiprocessor-SoC (MPSoC), thus providing the required computational resources. Measurement results of the on-chip control system are presented and compared to simulation results based on Matlab/Simulink. Besides the presented application to nine-phase electrical drives, the presented methodology can be adapted for other complex power electronic systems like multi-axis control applications or modular multilevel converters.
