Synthetic Inertia Monitoring and Alert System in the Chinese New Power System

The power system with high penetration of renewable energy sources suffers from stability issues due to a lack of rotational inertia. A synthetic inertia monitoring and alert system allows TSOs to maximize the renewable energy penetration without threatening the stability and security of the power system. This paper discusses the techniques to define the critical equivalent inertia constant of a power system that avoids the security and stability issue and introduces a real-world synthetic inertia system that is implemented in the Chinese Northwestern grid. According to the existing limitations in the synthetic inertia system applied in Northwestern grid, the paper discusses the potential developing techniques for the future synthetic inertia system that can actually meet the needing of the coming Chinese New Power System.
