Medium Access Control Frame Design

This chapter helps the readers, even those unfamiliar with the IEEE 802.11 standard, to quickly grasp the idea of how information that is relevant to the functionalities is signaled in IEEE 802.11 frames. It provides the design details for the information elements, main radio (MR) medium access control (MAC) frames and wake‐up radio (WUR) MAC frames. Information elements are small containers that carry management information. This information is shared by including one or more elements in Management frames that are exchanged between devices. The chapter describes the IEs transmitted in management frames by the MR to specify the capabilities and operation parameters of the associated WUR STA. The WUR Capabilities element advertises support for WUR functionalities. IEEE 802.11ba has defined several WUR frames with different functionalities and purposes. WUR Discovery frames contain a minimum amount of network information that is useful for discovering a specific network.
