Antimycotic effect of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis

Antimycobacterial activity of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis in mice with tuberculosis was the purposeof this study. The effect Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis on metabolic processes in mice with tuberculosis infection was assessed by the parameters of lipid, purine metabolism, aminotransferase activity, glucose levels, albumin, lactate and nitric oxide in serum spectrophotometrically. The antimycobacterial effect of oral administration of the Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis was estimated by the mycobacterial load in the lungs, liver and spleen of infected mouse. Using resazurin and MTT, the effect of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis on the growth of Mycobacteria in vitro was evaluated. Oral administration of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis in mice with tuberculosis infection induced by intravenously injection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis caused total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins cholesterol, albumin, ALT and AST, glucose and lactate increase compared with intact mice. Whereas, serum level of lipid and purine metabolite, glucose and lactate in mice treated with Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis were lower compared with infected mice and mice treated with isoniazid. Oral administration of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis infusion decreased the Mycobacterium tuberculosis load in liver and spleen. Resazurin and MTT test indicates inhibition of Mycobacterium growth by Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis in vitro.
