5G Mobile Networks Security Landscape and Major Risks

The 5G mobile networks are not just a technologically advanced version of currently deployed 4th generation systems but a completely new telecommunication paradigm powered by software‐defined networking, network function virtualization, and cloud computing. This chapter provides a fresh insight into the end‐to‐end 5G security threat landscape, analyzes the recommendations to secure the 5GS, identifies evolved attack vectors, recognizes the vulnerabilities, and categorizes the major risks to highlight the crucial gaps currently prevailing in the way of 5G to become a trustworthy ecosystem. It also introduces the research groups working toward a safe and secure 5G network infrastructure and briefly reviews their lines of works. The chapter investigates the 3GPP security recommendations to secure 5G networks. It highlights a few decisive aspects of 5G security and state‐of‐the‐art systems currently available to secure the network.
