Model Characterization and Frequency Regulation in Wind-Diesel Hybrid Microgrids

This paper investigates the ability of a Type-4 wind turbine generator (WTG) to provide frequency regulation and damping support in an isolated microgrid. The selected system has a set of diesel generators and a comparatively large WTG that define its dynamics. This system is a representation of the grid that serves the community of St. Mary’s, Alaska. In this system, the loss of a single generator can generate oscillations in the system that can be worsened by the use of a traditional droop control for frequency regulation. This work characterizes the system using a probing technique coupled with a system identification routine. With this characterization, a controller is designed to ensure the WTG provides frequency regulation to the system while also damping potential oscillations in the system.
