Configuring an Intelligent Reflecting Surface using Strongest Tap Maximization Heuristic Technique

An Engineered meta-surface is the key revolution in making the propagation environment smart. These surfaces are also referred to as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) or Intelligent Surface (IRS) or Software Controlled Meta-surface or Hypo surfaces can enhance the meaningful coverage by sensing the environment and recycling the existing electromagnetic (EM) waves and reflecting them toward the direction of interest. In this paper, the dataset from Signal Processing Cup (SPCUP) 2021 is used to configure the Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface of 4096 elements. The channel response coefficients separated by 64 elements apart are highly correlated and exhibit periodicity resulting in the discovery of the surface possessing uniform square geometrical structure of dimension 64 × 64. Based upon the correlation of the channel response vectors observed in dataset1, the solution to an under determined system in dataset2 is achieved enabling simultaneous estimation of direct path and the average response of the first IRS element. Finally the data rate of 50 users is computed using a low complex heuristic technique known as Strongest Tap Maximization (STM) achieving the average data rate metric of 109.9590 Mbps by aligning the reflected signal path from the all the elements of the RIS along the direction of strongest signal path.
