Interactive Intelligent Exercise System Design for the Elderly

In this paper, we aim to design an interactive motion demo and posture detection system for the elderly to exercise and help them to keep healthy. We demonstrate the exercise videos shown in the holographic projection display and instruct them to correct improper motions by speech according to the information retrieved from the camera. The system will give the participant a score after finishing the exercise. The demonstration of the holographic projection display has a three-dimensional effect, which is different from the display method of the 2D plane. This research mainly uses OpenPose to detect each joint point of the human body, and after grasping the user’s movement, it calculates the angle of each joint to determine whether the user’s angle is correct, and encourages or corrects the user through speech cues to improve the user’s confidence and accuracy. Experiments show that the elderly are attracted to holographic projection display demonstrations. In addition, the cue and scoring functions are useful during the activity. This system can also be adapted to limb rehabilitation as well.
