Optimum Placement of Static Synchronous Compensator in IEEE 57 Bus System

The power network got increasingly sophisticated as the electrical market grew in response to increased demand and infrastructure. Due to tremendous increase in demand, the load on the existing system may hampers frequently. This increase in demand may results in over-loading conditions. The active and reactive power over-loading may occur, which results in poor performance of power system. Flexible AC transmission system are the power devices which only gives solution to relive this over-loading and enhances the power system performance. But due to high capital cost of power devices, it is suggested to connect at optimum location in power system. In this research, load power over-loading is carried out as a congestion state and to scale down the effect of over-loading is observed by connecting power devices in optimum location. A large standard system IEEE 57 bus system is taken as reference case to investigate the condition. Shunt Power device static synchronous compensator is used here to enhance the voltage profile which enhances the overall performance of power system. Total system loss sensitivity indices are used to identify the optimum position of a shunt power device static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). MATLAB toolbox PSAT and Power World Simulator software is utilized for verification purpose.
