A Comparative Study on Multilevel Inverters with Reduced Number of Components – A Review

In the academic research field, Multilevel Inverter (MLI) spread and replaced the conventional inverters. The output voltage of these inverters is very close to sinusoidal and due to this it has lower harmonics. The size of the filter gets reduced as the harmonics content in these inverters are less. As the number of output voltage levels increases in conventional multilevel inverter topologies, the number of devices also increases. This makes the circuit costly and bulky. Here comes the problem for researchers to develop new topology where there is optimum number of dc sources, switches or components in the MLI circuit. This paper gives a detailed overview of different topologies of MLI which having reduced components and are able to produce high voltage level. The pros and cons of each topology have been discussed in this paper and also, the comparison between the performance parameter has been made so that one could decide the optimum and suitable topology for their required system.
