Cuneiform Symbols Identification System using Correlation Technique

Cuneiform is one of the oldest forms of writing used in the ancient Middle East. It provides information about the ancient Sumerian history and the history of humanity as a whole. This project is aimed to develop an algorithm to read and identify cuneiform characters. In order to achieve this objective, the cuneiform image is initially loaded into the program memory to apply some preprocessing operations including binarizing the image and removing noise and unwanted elements. Then, characters are extracted through the segmentation phase which uses vertical and horizontal projections. The characters are then passed to the correlation function to compare each character with the utilized database. This proposed algorithm can be further applied to more complex cases of cuneiform symbols and can be utilized in historical museums.
