Development of the NOAA-19 Satellite Data Receiver Ingest System based on FPGA

The issue of mastery of the ingest system is important because ingest cards are a "key component" that is not traded except in one system package. Therefore, through mastery of this component, changes in data transmission rate will be followed continuously as long as the COTS component is available. Currently, a satellite data transmission system is in progress from band L to band X, which has an impact on increasing the data transmission rate from 1 to 6 Mbps to 15 to 80 Mbps. To overcome these problems, an intermediate technology was developed by designing an ingest system based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) supported by several modular boards and can be reconfigure to get higher capability/speed. The FPGA board functions to receive data and clock streams of the NOAA-19 satellite from the demodulator serially and forward it to the personal computer (PC) via a Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) output unit. The output of this ingest system design is a RAW data file to be further processed into level-0 products by PC Ingest. Implementing the ingest system is expected to reduce the dependence on purchasing commercial ingest cards.
