Practical Experience on WAMS Technology Implementation in Bhutan Power System

With the paradigm shift of power system utilities toward smart-grid technology, the implementation of the Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) becomes indispensable. It enhances the visibility and situational awareness in the power system. To supplement the conventional Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS), Disturbance Recorders, and data acquisition of protection relays, Bhutan Power Corporation Ltd. (BPC) has deployed this system starting 2016. This paper presents the experiences and lessons learned from the implementation of WAMS in the Bhutan power system network and the way forward plans.
