Design of High Isolation Circular Shape Patch Element Multi-band Phased Array Antenna for Millimeter Wave 5G Mobile Handsets

In this paper we have proposed a novel shape multi-band circular patch antenna for millimeter wave communication. Using this novel shape circular patch element we have designed a multi-band phased array antenna for 5G mobile handsets that operates at millimeter wave frequency ranges. The overall dimension of the proposed circular patch antenna element is $9.8\times 6\times 0.8$mm and it operates at the following multiple frequency bands namely, at 28.7GHz, 37.5GHz, 42.69 and 54.3GHz, which are very convenient for millimeter wave wireless communication systems, like 5G. The circular shape microstrip antenna is designed on the Rogers RT5880 substrate having permittivity of 2.2, tangential losses of 0.0009 and copper as conducting materials. The designed multi-band eight-element phased array antenna has an overall size of 80mm×12mm×0.8mm which is appropriate for mobile handsets. To reduce the mutual coupling, we have used metamaterials which results better isolation. To carry out the simulations CST Microwave Studio and MATLAB has been used. From the simulations we obtained bandwidths of 7.384GHz, isolation levels of −35dB, S parameter between-18.7 and-61.7 dB, efficiency of more than 85%, gain of 14.5 to 15.5 dB, an envelope correlation coefficient of 0.0001/0.0002 and directivity gain of more than 9.93. In general, the simulation results for the operating frequencies ranging from 27.6 GHz to 54.3 GHz show better performance in terms of bandwidth, gain, radiation efficiency, and better beam steering. Therefore, we propose geometrically linear eight element multi-band phased array antenna with circular shape patch elements for millimeter wave 5G mobile handset.
