Design and Implementation of an Internet of Things Based Smart Energy Meter using Radio Frequency communication protocol

In this paper, a complete design and implementation of a modular and open-source smart meter for educational and research purposes are presented. The smart meter tracks energy usage, uploads the data to a cloud server, and can be used to remotely operate appliances through a control relay. User the Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology that allows a connection of devices to the internet, the smart meter serves as a sensor node. Consumers can monitor their energy consumption profiles at the appliance level and perform control actions to manage energy usage efficiently by utilizing automation platforms with smart meters. The experimental results show that the proposed system performance compared to the calibrated measurements is feasible to use in real-world applications for a low-cost automatic energy meter reading with high efficiency.
