Solar Panel Power Simulation for Shade Detection

We construct models of the AC power production from real residential solar systems, with the goal of estimating the losses in the systems due to the shading from nearby objects. The purpose of this paper is to document the procedure used to model the systems. Our goal is to generate modeled PV power signals that are a reasonable match to the shape and scale of the measured data, and to use that model to estimate the losses experienced by these systems due to shade. In this paper, we describe the details of how this model is implemented and how the necessary model parameters are derived, and we present a summary of shade losses in 25 residential rooftop PV systems.
