A Load Shedding Methodology Using Monte Carlo Simulation in a Renewable Integrated Grid

Voltage and frequency stability are the two most important factors to maintain the electricity supply interruption free. However, because of unprecedented events and disturbances, it often becomes very difficult to maintain uninterrupted supply of electricity. Load shedding is the final line of protection in the event of a major disturbance, preventing the system frequency from falling below a threshold value and the system from going into blackout. However, in some instances, the conventional Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) approach may result in more deviation in frequency and load cut. The purpose of this study is to develop a load shedding method that enhances the frequency responsiveness of low inertia networks while maintaining acceptable voltage stability. The proposed strategy leverages the FVSI technique to apply a substantial share of load shedding to comparatively weaker buses considering voltage stability. Moreover, the load shedding amount has been limited by applying Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) approach. The developed strategy's performance is investigated in a modified IEEE 39 bus network. The simulations are run with two severe contingencies in mind: the loss of 560 MW generation and the loss of 832 MW generation. According to the findings of the research, the recommended load shedding mechanism helps to conserve adequate frequency response in all simulated scenarios. Furthermore, as compared to the traditional UFLS mechanism, the new approach results in reduced frequency fluctuation and load reduction.
