Flow Regulation for Partially Connected and Automated Traffic: An Optimal Control Approach

This paper proposed a Floe regulator for partially connected and automated traffic. The major breakthrough of the proposed controller is: i) managing large-scale traffic by controlling a small portion of vehicles. ii) ensuring the stability of the traffic system under control. iii) enables optimal process control of flow. To evaluate the proposed controller, a VISSIM based microscopic simulation evaluation was conducted. Sensitivity analysis was performed for CAV Penetration Rate (PR), demand level (v/c ratio) and target demand drop. Results confirm that the control accuracy of the proposed controller is generally over 80% across all CAV PRs, demand levels and target demand drops. By utilizing an optimal control structure, the target demand drop for the proposed controller is extended to 40%. This enables the proposed controller to manage heavier traffic. This provides the foundation for future CAV-based traffic management strategies.
