4G Spectrum Occupancy Analysis in Chennai-India

In this paper, we study and monitor the spectrum activity status of various frequency bands of 4G Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) cellular systems in Chennai, India. The measurements taken from three different places within a 1000 square-meter area are analyzed at different times of the day. We also present the data capturing and spectrum monitoring processes in detail. Numerical analysis of the captured data has been explained in detail. The results show that the activity percentage changes significantly within a small geographical region with a minor variation of ±1% at outdoor and ±5% at indoor scenarios. We also present the average percentage count of the LTE-A frequencies for various session of a day. This motivates for secondary user spectrum allocation in Cognitive Radio (CR).
