Automatic Voltage Stabilizer using a PWM controlled AC-AC converter topology

The quality of power delivered to the customer is a matter of extreme importance. The continuous demand for increased productivity by customers leads us to be concerned about the quality of electrical power being delivered. Voltage variation, among all other kinds of power-quality issues, is what we have to address and deal with specifically because it can lower efficiency levels and can lead to equipment damage in appliances like televisions, air-conditioners and refrigerators. That is why voltage stabilizers are necessary so that these electronics aren't affected by any fluctuation as they are used everyday in our homes. In this paper, we propose an affordable AC voltage stabilizer that can be integrated along with our home distribution board system in order to keep devices safe from too much electricity use fluctuations on a house grid (avoid brownouts). This proposed model of the voltage stabilizer has four main parts: PWM based AC-AC converter; buck booster transformer; RLC low pass filter and a controller. Quick response to continuous variations in voltages (correcting it), less waveform distortion and use of high frequency transformers leading to reduced size are some advantages offered by such a system. The simulation of the proposed system has been carried out using Matlab-Simulink software. The prototype model of the proposed system has been implemented with Arduino Mega (Atmel ATmega 2560) microcontroller.
