Laboratory Stands and Teaching Method of Goose Data Exchange between Power Protection Devices

Internal logic configuration of power protection relays are becoming more complex as the applicability of standards such as IEC 61850 is becoming more common. The paper describes laboratory stands built and the method of teaching protection relay setting with emphasis on digital data exchange such as GOOSE datagrams implemented in the laboratory of digital power protection in Warsaw University of Technology. New exercises were introduced to the didactic process in the form of course “Digital secondary circuits of power substations”, and are built around five laboratory stands, where every stand incorporates two protection relays from one of the following vendors: Schneider Electric, ABB, GE, Siemens and Computers & Control. Laboratory stands concept is presented as well as details on didactic process carried out, including the teaching of distributed logic configuration. The last chapter describes also interoperability issues faced when testing the data exchange between devices from aforementioned power protection vendors.
