Co-simulation for Finite Element Model Calibration of Synchronous Generators Connected to an Infinite Bus

This paper gives an efficient way to calibrate finite element model of synchronous generators connected to an infinite bus. The study is conducted on a 2.5 MVA salient-pole machine. The two types of simulation according to windings excitation are first investigated. This investigation showed that the current driven modelling which represents an isolated generator is easy to calibrate in terms of power factor. In contrary, the voltage driven simulation of a synchronous generator connected to an infinite bus which is its most common mode of operation is very cumbersome to tune in order to reach a desired operating point in terms of active and reactive power. Therefore, a co-simulation is set up to calibrate the finite element model by adjusting the phase angle of grid voltage and the field current in closed loop. Although, the study is carried out on a salient-pole synchronous generator its application is straightforward for turbo-generators.
