Smart Hat Antenna For Wifi Applications

A new antenna structure called Smart Hat Antenna (SHA) with about 16.67 % bandwidth is presented. The antenna is composed of a central common reflector surrounded by multiple monopoles, both positioned on a ground plane. By keeping the beamwidth and resonant frequency constant, one monopole element is connected at a time to achieve beam switching. Then, eight beams are generated, covering the entire azimuth plane with a peak gain of 7.5 dB for θmax=90° (i.e. elevation of 0°). Only 1.72 dB is lost in overlap.
