A Joint Design of Polar Coding and Generalised Spatial Modulation

With the development of the Internet of Things, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), a promising technology, had been widely implied in many communication systems. Polar-Coded Spatial Modulation (Polar-SM), which integrates the Polar-coding and Spatial Modulation, was proposed for highly improving the performance of the coded SM-MIMO system. However, as the number of transmit antennas (TA) increases, the Polar-SM scheme increases spectral efficiency slowly as a logarithmic function. Based on the Polar-SM framework, this paper proposed a joint design of the Polar-Coding and Generalized Spatial Modulation scheme, which is capacity preserved, namely Polar-GSM. Different from Polar-SM, which only schedules one TA in each time slot, this paper relaxes this constraint such that more spatial efficiency is obtained by simultaneously activating more than one antenna. The Polar-GSM scheme includes the three-stage channel transform. i.e., transmit antennas combination(TAC)-symbol partitions $\rightarrow$ modulation sub-channels partitions $\rightarrow$ bit sub-channel partitions. Furthermore, the framework of the transmitter and receiver based on the proposed Polar-GSM scheme is also given with a detailed analysis of system performance. The construction of polar codes in each modulation sub-channel is analyzed. Finally, simulation results provide the performance comparison between the Polar-GSM and other coded SM-MIMO schemes.
