Efficient Energy Management in a Microgrid

The role of an energy management system (EMS) in a microgrid is studied in this paper. A task is formulated to optimize the economic costs of the considered microgrid without using an EMS. The respective task is solved on a specific example. Then an EMS is introduced in the microgrid, the correspondent model is modified, and a new task is solved. New energy schedules are calculated, providing higher energy efficiency for the microgrid. The Matlab environment is used to run a standard solver. A significant improvement in the cost outcomes is achieved due to the EMS operation activity. It is an illustration of the importance of EMS effect in microgrid applications. The presented approach can be used to incorporate an EMS into a real microgrid.
