Optimization of an operating point in high intensity synchrotrons

In a synchrotron such as the JHF 3 GeV proton synchrotron (PS) and the 50 GeV PS, the choice of operating point in the tune space depends mostly on the high intensity behavior of a proton beam, not by the magnet manufacturing error fields. We have started a dry optimisation run for an operating point, namely the simulation of a tune survey with space charge effects. The idea is to simulate the early stage of the commissioning process so that the obviously fatal area in the tune space is excluded from the beginning in the real commissioning and any unnecessary radioactivation due to beam loss is minimized.
