Particle Swarm Optimization based Tuning Method of PI Regulator for PV fed Shunt Active Power Filter

Traditional shunt Active Power Filter (APF) is being integrated with renewable and Distributed Generation (DG) like solar PV or wind for enhancement of its capabilities. Such an integration improves DC link voltage regulation of shunt APF, which is crucial to its core filtering operations. Also, such integrated system leads to reduction in number of components including additional grid-tie converter for the DG. However, designing an optimal controller for DC link regulation of a PV fed shunt APF is tedious because of involving varieties of operating conditions such as variation in grid voltage, solar irradiation change and switching of the loads. In this work, a Particle Swarm Optimization based PI-tuning method is proposed, which takes into account above-mentioned conditions and doesn’t require to eliminate the PI output limits while tuning. MATLAB/Simulink based implementation and simulations validate the superiority of proposed tuning method over conventional method.
