A Universal Domain Name Resolution Service – Need and Challenges - Study on Blockchain Based Naming Services

DNS, the domain name service, over the past few decades has evolved as the critical component of Internet. The conventional DNS gains its authority from the root to the TLDs and further down to the individual names. The evolution of Blockchain had fueled the development of Decentralized Apps leading to Decentralized Internet. The Decentralized Naming Services - have become one of the core objectives in the pathway to Decentralized Internet, and has been witnessing a number of protocols and mechanisms recently. In this paper, we have presented a study on different blockchain-based naming services, their architectures, advantages, disadvantages and we emphasize on the need for a universal name resolver catering to the namespaces in both conventional DNS and blockchain-based DNS services. The implementation challenges in such a Universal Name Resolution Service along with the requirement of security, privacy and availability are discussed in this work.
