S-HIP: Simplified HIP Protocol for IoT Networks

Many devices connected to the Internet and communicating with each other create the Internet of Things. There are still open challenges in this domain, such as big data, security, communications, and even constrained device resources. Our work focuses on bringing the solution to secure IoT communication, making it more energy efficient by combining multiple approaches. We have proposed an optimized version of the HIP protocol, S-HIP, which saves from 67 to 75 % of energy compared to the original one. The proposed solution achieves one of the best results by comparing it to other solutions. The reduced energy requirements are especially beneficial for energy-constrained IoT sensor nodes, which are commonly powered by batteries.
