Capacitor-less D-STATCOM for Voltage Profile Improvement in a SmartGrid Distribution Network with High PV Penetration

Distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems can provide a multitude of advantages to both utilities and consumers facilitated through the smart grid framework. However, variation in the available solar flux and other changing weather conditions create challenges for the wide-scale integration of this highly distributed generation. The temporally varying reverse power flow and ensuing variable voltage rise in distribution feeders creates challenges for the distribution system operator. One of the technologies to overcome these issues is to use reactive power compensation to stabilize the voltage profile within limits set by the relevant standards. In this paper, a distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) is proposed to inject the required reactive power to provide the needed voltage support in the low-voltage distribution system. Using model predictive control and a matrix converter (MC) topology, it is reliable and is capable of long service life as it employs inductive energy storage instead of aluminum electrolytic capacitors, which are used by other circuits, which will improve the system reliability. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed technology.
