Vehicle-to-Grid Technology for Microgrid Frequency Regulation Using DC Fast Charging Architecture

Electric vehicle (EV) batteries can be used as potential energy storage devices in microgrids. They can help with the microgrid energy management by storing energy when there is a surplus (Grid to Vehicle, G2V) and feeding energy into the grid when needed (Vehicle to Grid, V2G). An appropriate infrastructure and control systems must be developed to realize this concept. A microgrid test system is modelled with a DC fast charging station to connect EVs. To show the V2G and G2V power transfer, simulation studies are carried out. The test results indicate that EV batteries can regulate the frequency in a microgrid utilizing G2V and V2G operating modes. The modelling result indicates that the EV combined with V2G technology can reduce grid frequency fluctuations.
