TCP Congestion Analysis of Wired and Wireless Links Using NS3

Congestion and traffic control is one of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) functions. The performance of TCP depends on the algorithm applied to detect packet drop or delay as an indication to congestion. There are lots of TCP algorithms targeted for different network scenarios such as heavy traffic, low buffer, and low link utilization. This paper demonstrates an evaluation of average throughput and packet drop as metrics for different TCP algorithms in wired and wireless topologies. In other words, this paper analyzes the quality of TCP Reno, TCP New Reno, TCP Vegas, TCP Bic, TCP Cubic, TCP High Speed, TCP Westwood, and TCP Yeah based on wired and wireless models. Wireless model was based on 802.11 N. Both models are analyzed using Bandwidth-Delay Product (BDP). The NS3 simulation results show that Bic and Cubic perform well based on network utilization speed. When considering delay and packet loss metrics, TCP Vegas is more efficient than the other compared algorithms.
