An Enhanced Routing Protocol for Energy Harvesting-Wireless Sensor Networks for Optimal Execution of IoT Applications

Energy harvesting (EH) in internet of things (IoT) networks is gaining attention in recent years due to the benefits offered by this technology. The EH techniques enables ease of access of the devices or things connected to it when implemented on IoT based wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The implementation of EH technology in the WSNs is a growing research area and there are various methods modelled in literature to enable the EH process in sensor nodes (SNs). The EH process prolongs the network lifetime thereby improving the network throughput and functioning for a longer time. In this paper, an enhanced routing protocol for EH-WSN is proposed to enable optimal execution of IoT applications. The proposed model can be classified into two main stages such as energy prediction and routing. At the initial stage, the arrival energy of the nodes from the harvesters is predicted using the proposed hybrid self-organizing map (HSOM) neural network energy prediction model. The energy predicted at this stage is used as the input along with the residual energy of the nodes to initiate the energy prediction process. In the second stage, optimal routing decisions are taken for data transmissions by the chaotic flamingo search (CFS) algorithm that is constrained under the quality of service (QoS) metrics. The simulation results of the proposed model proved the effectiveness of the model against the existing mechanisms.
