A Delay-based Interest Packet Forwarding Strategy in Vehicular Named Data Networking

The network topology is constantly changing in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and the frequent disconnection and connection of nodes in the network affect the successful transmission of data. To separate data from the host at the network layer and ensure data transmission, Vehicular Named Data Networking (VNDN) was recently proposed for the advantages of content communication. However, the use of flooding mechanism in VNDN can easily cause congestion in wireless channels with limited bandwidth. To alleviate the network congestion problem, the existing research has proposed a few solutions in which the optimal nodes undertake the forwarding task, whereas additional communication is still needed to update neighbouring node information. In order to reduce useless forwarding without additional overhead, this paper proposes a forwarding strategy of interest packets to alleviate congestion, in which the data forwarding process of shorter-distance nodes is postponed and cancelled by the introduction of a carefully designed artificial delay. Compared with other strategies in simulation, the scheme has a balanced hit ratio and delay, and network overhead is greatly reduced.
