Generalized Circuit Topology and Classification of Multiline Hybrid HVDC Circuit Breakers

We propose a generalized circuit of multiline hybrid HVDC circuit breakers (MHCBs) for high-voltage dc grids. MHCB is a kind of dc circuit breaker topology that shares a semiconductor circuit breaker between dc lines. Various types of MHCB topologies have been proposed. However, no attempt has been carried out to find regularity or generality in the MHCBs. We found regularities in the MHCBs and propose a generalized circuit of them. It reveals that there are five possible fundamental topologies of MHCB. The MHCBs previously proposed can be derived from the generalized circuit and can be classified into the five topologies. The generalized circuit contributes to the derivation of new MHCB configurations and their modifications. To verify the generalized circuit and show an example, a derivation procedure of a novel MHCB configuration is presented. The current interruption process of the novel MHCB is verified with a circuit simulation.
