Review of the Performance of the Power Sector in Some Selected African Countries

In this paper, the electric power sector in some selected countries in Africa was reviewed with respect to their generating capacity, available capacity, and energy access rate. Africa is known to be a formidable market for investors; however, with the present energy shortage, there are indications that investors might look elsewhere where affordable and clean energy is guaranteed. This paper, therefore x-rays the electric power sector in some selected Western, Eastern, and Central Africa countries; their development with respect to time and also their viability as a good business location in the future. The reviewed papers show that there is still a wide gap in electricity distribution and consumption between rural and urban areas, poor energy access rates, abundant untapped primary energy sources, and lack of adequate awareness with respect to renewable energy usage. The results obtained indicate that Nigeria has the capacity to supply energy to some countries within the West Africa region if there is stability in its political environment.
