Investigation on loss reduction strategies of single-core HVAC submarine cables

Submarine cables play an important role in the cross-sea transmission system. However, the power loss in such systems should be reduced as it affects the service life and limits the ampacity of the submarine cables. This paper proposes an accurate methodology based on the multi-conductor analysis theory to investigate the loss reduction strategies of the single-core high voltage AC (HVAC) submarine cable. The coupled line model is used to improve the calculation efficiency. The case study of the 500-kV submarine cable line of Zhoushan 500 kV power transmission project is conducted. The results show that connecting resistors and reactors at the grounding ends of the cable sheath can significantly reduce power loss. The connection of reactors exhibits a higher reduction of power loss than the resistors.
