An Evaluation of Renewable Fraction Using Energy Storage for Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Today, increasing electric vehicle (EV) popularity thanks to the incentives leads to grow the number of EV charging stations (EVCS). Meeting the increasing demand using fossil fuels puts countries' carbon emission targets into trouble. Therefore, hybrid power systems (HPS) can reduce the grid dependency on energy production using enhancing distributed renewable energy technologies. In this context, the parking lot of Electric-Electronics Faculty at Yildiz Technical University has been determined as the study area. First, HPS solutions, including PV and grid, are discussed in HOMER Grid to meet the increasing EVCS demand considering vehicle capacity and roof restrictions of the relevant parking lot. Later, it was desired to evaluate the self-consumption and renewable rate by integrating energy storage systems with certain capacities into HPS, in line with zero carbon emission targets. The RF could be increased up to 91.9%, and the energy exchange rate (EER) could be increased up to 80.2 % in the first hybrid option without ESS. In addition, the cost of energy (COE) could be reduced by up to 29.3%, even the highest charging demand. RF, SCR, and SSR could be increased up to 6%, 5.7%, and 7.8% in the most cost-effective HPS option with ESS, respectively. With the proposed solutions, self-consumption and, therefore, renewable energy will increase, and zero carbon emission targets will be achieved more quickly, both with the spread of prosumers and the advancement of technology.
