Special Session: Closed Chassis Platform Debug of Compute Systems using the Functional Ubiquitous USB Type-C Receptacle

Debug of current day SoCs at the platform level is extremely important to have the ability to debug the system without cracking open the case. This is done using the available closed-chassis interfaces and one such interface that is becoming ubiquitous is USB Type-C. With Type-C receptacle becoming widely the most popular choice by most OEMs/ODMs, this ubiquitous connector/receptacle becomes the choicest interface for closed-chassis debug purposes, providing DCI-OOB (Direct Connect Interface – Out of Band debug) capability, Debug Class (DbC) over USB2 and USB3 interfaces. This paper provides a debug architecture framework for capturing Software, Firmware and Hardware traces from the SoCs/platforms/systems via the ubiquitous USB Type-C receptacle and enables debug without cracking open the case. The debug information can be used for infield verification and validation as well as for silicon lifecycle management purposes.
