An Approach to Detect Islanding in Photovoltaic Based Distributed Generation Systems using Sequence Components of Voltage

Islanding detection is one of the vital events which needs to be taken care of for the desired operation, human protection, power quality deterioration and control of a microgrid system. Because of the complex nature of the distribution system, bidirectional power flows in the microgrid system, the islanding detection is not an easy task. This paper proposes a passive islanding detection technique based on the reciprocal of the sum of the individual magnitudes of the positive sequence and the negative sequence voltages at the desired location. The technique presented is simulated and tested for various test conditions such as faults on utility grid side as well as on the microgrid side, disconnection of a distributed generation system, etc. in MATLAB Simulink environment.
