Optimal Planning of Energy Storage in Power Systems with High Proportion of Renewable Energy

In order to solve the problems of shortage of fossil energy and environmental degradation, the development of renewable energy has become an inevitable trend. As the proportion of renewable energy continues to increase, the problem of renewable energy accommodation is becoming more and more prominent, and the fluctuation of renewable energy will threaten the safe and stable operation of the power system. Energy storage, as an effective means to promote renewable energy accommodation and improve system flexibility, has developed rapidly in recent years. However, due to its high investment cost, how to rationally allocate energy storage has become a key issue. This paper proposes a two-stage programming configuration method for energy storage to promote renewable energy accommodation. The first-stage is the energy storage planning model with the goal of minimizing the total investment cost of energy storage. In the second-stage, a coordinated and optimized operation model with renewable energy, thermal power and energy storage is established with the goal of minimizing the operation cost of the power system. Case study based on IEEE 30-bus system shows that the installation location and capacity of the energy storage system change under different installed capacity of renewable energy. The energy storage can improve the renewable energy accommodation of the system and reduce the operation cost of the system.
