Development of Arduino Based ECG Device for STEM Education and HRV Applications

STEM education is to cultivate the innovation ability of scientific and technological. STEM activities emphasize the application of interdisciplinary and the ability to solve real world problems. This study develops a cost-effective Arduino based ECG monitoring device. The hardware kit adopts a modular design and can be used as a STEM aid for school activities. ECG measurements are carried out through the graphical operator interface of the smartphone app. The ECG data is processed by 3 kinds of filtering (median filter, FIR filter, and wavelet filter) to obtain the precise R wave position. A customized GUI is designed to provide accurate R-R interval data for HRV analysis. The proposed systems have the advantage to promote STEM education and HRV research.
