Topological Optimization of Automobile’s Control Arm

Based on SOLIDWORKS, a 3D geometrical model is established for the lower controller arm of a commercial vehicle, after which the mechanical parameters are determined through unidirectional tensile test. Then, based on the improved SIMP model, topology optimization calculation and lightweight design are carried out for the control arm. Finally, static analysis and modal analysis are performed for the model before and after optimization. The results suggest that after the topology optimization, the material of control arm satisfies the static requirements under multiple working conditions in addition to improved utilization ratio. Compared with original structure, resonance concentrates more at low frequency with regard to the characteristic frequency of optimized structure. The proposed method for topology optimization calculation provides not only ideas and suggestions for subsequent optimization of control arm model but also a technological approach of numerical simulation for topology optimization of other similar structure.
