RfG NC implementation in Europe - The whole picture

In 2020 FGH has conducted a study for the European Commission (EC) on the status quo of grid code implementation according to the provisions of the Requirement for Generators Network Code (RfG NC) [1]. The study request gave a special focus on the level of convergence of technical requirements. Hence, not only the implementation of exhaustive and non-exhaustive requirements according to the RfG NC has been analysed but also various, additional requirements have been identified in several grid codes, which differ from the regular RfG NC pattern. The study also includes the sum-up of the national specifications with respect to Power Generation Module (PGM) type threshold definition and an overview on the national-wise involved parties and authorities.Next to the 26 European Member States (MS) as of 2020 (Malta excluded) the analyses were also carried out for nine additional non-MS. The EC's study tender had given a special emphasis on type A power generation modules (PGM). Nevertheless, type B, C and D requirements, most typical for wind farms, are fully considered in the FGH study. Moreover, FGH has enlarged the original scope of the study request including also the assessment on different compliance schemes implemented or being in discussion, respectively, in the countries under consideration. As well, an analysis on provisions on storage system within the national grid codes is given in the study. The study provides helpful recommendations for the further development of European Network Codes.The study has been published by the EC in late 2020. Hence, this presentation will sum up all up-to-date information on these issues which still provide a big challenge to both wind turbine manufacturers and wind farm project developers in order to meet the national specific grid code requirements. The paper will provide a concluding follow up to the interim report on the status quo of grid code implementation given in Dublin 2019.
