Comparative Study of Peak to Average Power Ratio in OFDM and FBMC Systems

Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) is one of the major problems in multicarrier systems especially in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system (OFDM). The key drawbacks of a high PAPR are increased complexity in analog to digital and digital to analog converters, as well as a reduction in RF amplifier efficiency. Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) is suggested as an alternative to OFDM to reduce the effect of PAPR. The PAPR component of the FBMC-OQAM technique is extremely high but it is less than PAPR in OFDM most of the time. In this paper, a comparative study of the effect of PAPR between OFDM and FBMC systems at the different number of subcarriers, symbols, and FFT points are presented. The simulation results confirm the improved PAPR performance of FBMC compared to OFDM. The results also show that the effect of PAPR is minimized when fewer number symbols, subcarriers and FFT points are used.
