Analysis of various Microstrip Patch Antenna Designs for 5G Applications

In this paper, various structured patch designs for microstrip antenna is analyzed for better performance in the frequency spectrum for millimeter-wave 5G applications. The patch antenna is designed on Rogers RT5880 substrate (ɛr=2.2 and tan 8 =0.0009). The thickness of the substrate is 0.2mm and patch conductor is 0.035mm. Three different structures rectangular, circular and triangular shaped patches are proposed in this paper to operate at 28GHz. The antenna designs proposed is characterized using Advanced Design System tool. The microstrip patch dimensions are optimized to resonate at 28GHz and the simulated results are analyzed. The performance metrics shows triangular patch performance well at resonant frequency of 26.8GHz and further optimization can be done by varying the side lengths to make it operate at 28GHz.
